How Not To Write A Best Man Speech

Sometimes knowing what not to do is as good as knowing what to do. When it comes to writing a best man speech there are many things that can go wrong. Not only will you end up feeling very embarrassed if you make a mess of the speech but the whole day could be spoiled as well.

You will also want to keep in mind that most weddings will have at least a few people making videos of the event; if you mess up you could be the source of embarrassment for years to come. Here are some of things you will want to avoid.

- You have to put any problems that you have in your life aside on the day of the wedding. Do not use the speech as an opportunity to tell everyone about your problems or to air any grievances that you may have. You need to keep in mind, that this is not about you it is not your day. Avoid being negative, depressing, angry, or in any way bitter.

- Some people go a bit overboard in their praise of the bride and groom to such an extent that it sort of feels sickly sweet and insincere. Be positive but don’t get too carried away with the compliments.

- Make sure that you are thinking about the guests who will be at the wedding so that you do not have offensive material in your speech. Sometimes you will find that things you say in the pub are not so suitable at a wedding. Avoid being too vulgar because there is certain to be someone who gets offended.

- Don’t assume that you will be received as funny because it is a wedding if you are not normally known for your comedy. Doing a comedy routine is a huge risk, and if you haven’t got what it takes your performance might be subject to ridicule for years to come.

You only get married once, so have a stag weekend that you will remember forever.

Don’t Worry! Use an Outline for Your Best Man Speech

January 20, 2011 by

Is the day of the wedding drawing near and you still haven’t written your best man speech?  Don’t worry.  This article will give instructions on how to use an outline to make your best man speech writing much easier.

When you make an outline for your best man speech you’ve already done 75% of the work.  An outline keeps you organised and helps your speech flow smoothly from one thought to the next.

An outline can also keep you within the three to four minute time limit that you have to make the best man speech.  Here is a sample of an outline that may work for you as it is.  Of course you are free to modify the outline to your specifications.

A.  Introduction

     a.  Tell the audience who you are and your relationship to the groom.

B.  Background

     a.  Tell how long you’ve known the groom.

     b.  Tell a funny story in the past (if you’ve known each other since childhood.

     c.  Tell about a memorable, nostalgic moment you had together.

     d.  Tell about the first time the groom talked to you about the bride if it won’t embarrass him or her.

C.  Say something about the bride and how she’s changed the life of the groom for the better.

D.  Thank the host for giving the wedding and reception.  (Find out who is hosting the wedding so you can call them by name.)

E.  Lift your glass and give a toast to the bride and groom.

This is a very simple outline that covers all of the parts of your best man speech.  The background is the longest part of the speech, so watch your timing.  Tell your stories simply and with the fewest words possible.  Make a long story short.

You can interject a joke at the beginning or end of the best man speech.  Keep the joke clean.  You will be speaking in front of a mixed crowd.  A joke at the beginning may relax you if you’re good at telling jokes.  Also make it a wedding joke that is not embarrassing.

As you can see, an outline can help you put together a wonderful best man speech that is funny, entertaining and touching.  Everyone at the reception will be congratulating you for giving such a beautiful tribute to the bride and groom.

Questions For Your Wedding Cake Designer

January 20, 2011 by

Before you take a trip to visit the person who’ll be baking and designing your wedding cake, you need to know what to talk about. Make sure you have all the information you need to avoid disasters and to end up with the right cake for your big day. We’ve all heard wedding cake horror stories, and no one wants to be one of them!

Here’s a look at some of the questions you’ll want to ask your cake designer.

- How much experience do you have designing wedding cakes? Do you have a portfolio of work we can look at, or satisfied clients we can speak to? (And then be sure to follow up and call the previous clients.)

- Will you be having an open tasting soon? This is an important question that allows you to try out the different kinds of cake and fillings that your cake designer has to offer.

- Can you design a custom wedding cake? Or will we have to work from set designs instead? Is there an extra charge for custom work, and how adaptable are existing designs?

- Will toppers, tiers, stands, cutters, fountains and similar accessories be available with the cake, or will we need to supply them ourselves? Will there be an extra charge for these items? Do you have a portfolio of what these look like?

- When fresh flowers are used on a cake, will the designer coordinate with the florist, or will you need to bring the flowers to the designer? How far in advance will your need to deliver the flowers for the cake?

- What ingredients are usually used in the cake, and what icings are generally used? The better the ingredients, the more expensive, yet better tasting the cake will be.

- How long does it take you to make a wedding cake? How long and in what way will the cake be stored before the wedding? Better cakes are prepared closer to the wedding, but it takes several days to assemble most of them. Don’t believe anyone who says they make the whole cake from scratch the day of the wedding. Three to five days is more common.

- How are your cakes priced? Will fillings and detailing cost extra? May I have a price list and/or written proposal to take home?

- Do you deliver and how much is delivery? Can the delivery person make emergency repairs and arrange the cake table? Delivery is always best as the cake maker will have a secure way to transport it and the cake shouldn’t get ruined in transit. Asking these questions will help you make certain that you get a wedding cake that’s right for your occasion, that you don’t pay too much, and you won’t have any nasty surprises. Be prepared when you talk to your cake designer – it’s worth it.

How To Save On Flowers On Your Wedding Day

January 20, 2011 by

While flowers play a crucial role in wedding celebrations, it doesn’t always mean that you have to spend much on these decors just so that your big day can be considered a perfect event. Flowers symbolize beauty, and your own wedding can be as beautiful as you want to be even with a tight floral budget. You’ll only need a little bit of creativity if you want to minimize on floral expense without compromising your wedding style.

If you want to cut on flower cost, consider using alternatives. Your bridal bouquet for one can be as elegant as you want it to be even at a lower cost. By using your creativity, you can come up with substitutes for you and the whole entourage’s bouquet. Simply accessorize the bouquet with non-floral elements such as feathers, beads, and even pins. You may also opt for less expensive single-stem flowers like rose and orchids. They may be not as expensive but they surely can compete with style.

For centerpieces, they do not necessarily have to be complete flower arrangements all the time. Ornamental plants like cactus, moss, cypress, and even twigs can make good substitutes to make a centerpiece look fuller. You can even use your wedding souvenirs or food arrangements such as wine or breadbaskets as centerpiece.

If you are planning to hold your wedding on a beach or a garden, you can take advantage of the natural style of the location in order to cut on flower expenditure. Since most beaches and gardens do not require further designing, you can definitely save a lot. In addition, consider holding the reception just beside the location of the ceremony so that you’ll only have to design one setting instead of two.

When buying flowers, consider buying in wholesale. That way, you won’t have to waste your time and energy jumping from one supplier to another just to get the things that you need. You can also ask for a bigger discount if you are going to buy in wholesale. In the same manner, don’t buy flowers when it is the peak season and the flowers are in huge demand and sold at a higher price.

Finally, learn to prioritize on what is supposed to be the highlight among your wedding decors. Usually, it is the bridal bouquet, the backdrop, and the centerpiece that should be highlighted on your wedding photos. Focus on these factors when allocating your budget so that you will not be spending extra on unnecessary elements.

Putting The Right Words To Your Wedding Invitation

January 19, 2011 by

Writing your wedding invitation is not as easy as it looks like. In fact, making the invitation itself can be as time consuming as planning the rest of the wedding. The reason is that wedding invitations help set the mood for the big day itself. People can immediately tell what kind of wedding they are going to expect just by looking at them. That is also the reason why you should be extra careful on how you write the contents of your wedding invitation.

The first lines of a wedding invitation should be the parents’ request. Nowadays, some couples leave this important line blank especially if they are the ones paying for their own weddings. However, it is not a matter of who is paying but giving honour to the people who gave birth to you and raised you up as the person you are right now.

Choose a fun and unique way to write the request line. While it’s okay to stick to the usual “We request the honour of your company” line, it would be more interesting if you add a little bit of emotion and write something that goes, “Come and witness how two hearts are made into one.” This type of approach will work best for a casual wedding.

Moreover, you can also use words that are descriptive and expressive to go with your wedding theme. You can even write your lines in a form of a story to make it more interesting. If you’re having a beach wedding for example, you can begin with, “Let us get carried away in the waves of April and Eric’s love for each other.” No matter what the theme is, your creativity on writing lines like this one will surely pay off.

In case your wedding date falls on a holiday, it would be best to send the invitations two months before the exact day of the event. In your invitation, add a few words of advice that would inform your guest to do their bookings in advance especially if you are having a destination wedding. A simple line like this would be enough: “…we suggest that booking be made in advance.”

Lastly, before giving out the draft for the suppliers to print, make sure you have double-checked it for misspelled names of location and the bridal entourage. Make sure as well that you haven’t left out any important detail such as the date and time, the attire to be worn, and the church name and venue.

The author additionally often blogs about topics including the modest wedding gowns and formal gowns.
